Welcome Back, AI Geeks!

It’s time to stay updated with What’s Up in AI.

This week showed two sides of AI’s growing maturity — one deeply human, one highly technical. OpenAI’s training ChatGPT to respond safely to mental-health crises, while Anthropic is turning Excel into a financial analyst. The message? Intelligence isn’t just about speed — it’s about care, too.

Remember when software made business simpler?

Today, the average company runs 100+ apps—each with its own logins, data, and headaches. HR can’t find employee info. IT fights security blind spots. Finance reconciles numbers instead of planning growth.

Our State of Software Sprawl report reveals the true cost of “Software as a Disservice” (SaaD)—and how much time, money, and sanity it’s draining from your teams.

The future of work is unified. Don’t get SaaD. Get Rippling.

What Happened:
OpenAI revealed that more than 1.2 million users per week engage in conversations with ChatGPT that include explicit indicators of suicidal planning or intent. The company also reported about 560,000 users weekly showing signs of psychosis or mania. To address this, OpenAI enlisted over 170 mental-health professionals and updated its default model so that undesirable responses are now 65-80% fewer than before.

What You Need to Know:

  • OpenAI’s model now better recognizes signs of distress, de-escalates sensitive conversations, and guides users toward real-world support.

  • Roughly 0.15% of weekly active users (based on 800 million weekly users) exhibit suicidal-intent conversations.

  • Approximately 0.07% of weekly users show possible signs of psychosis/mania (~560k users).

  • ChatGPT’s improved model was rated at 91% compliance with desired safety behaviours, up from 77% previously.

  • OpenAI’s “Default Model” now integrates crisis-hotline routing and longer context detection for sensitive conversations.

  • The update addresses real cases, including a lawsuit alleging ChatGPT contributed to a teenager’s suicide by helping with planning.

Why It Matters:
With millions of high-risk interactions per year, OpenAI must now scale models that reliably de-escalate and redirect, or risk real harm. If trust drops, regulation and liability will follow, making this a pivotal moment for how AI handles human vulnerability.

#2 LATEST IN AI TODAY📎

What Happened:
Anthropic announced a new research-preview integration called “Claude for Excel,” enabling Claude to read, analyze, edit and build spreadsheets directly in Microsoft Excel. Alongside this launch, it added six agent-skills built for financial-services workflows and new connectors to real-time market-data.

What You Need to Know:

  • Claude for Excel appears as a sidebar in Excel, allowing users to debug formulas, build templates, and generate workbooks.

  • The feature is currently in beta for Max, Enterprise and Team userswith broader rollout expected later.

  • Financial-services firms such as banks and asset managers are early adopters; Claude is now integrated with real-time data connectors.

  • Agent-skills cover tasks like discounted-cash-flow modelling, coverage reporting and risk assessments—areas traditionally handled by analysts.

  • The move strategically positions Claude inside the enterprise stack, beyond chatbots, into workflow-embedded AI.

Why It Matters:
By embedding Claude directly in Excel, Anthropic is shifting the AI assistant from conversation to actionable workspace tool. This can cut modelling time, reduce errors, and accelerate decision-making, while challenging legacy BI tools and raising the bar for how AI integrates into business core systems.
