OpenAI just crashed DeepSeek's party with o3-mini and Deep Research
And everything else you need to catch up on that happened in the last week!

Welcome Back, AI Geeks!
It’s time to stay updated with What’s Up in AI.
Looks like OpenAI didn't take kindly to DeepSeek's mic drop - they fired back with o3-mini and Deep Research faster than you can say "AI arms race."
Talk about not letting the new kid have their moment in the sun! 😏

Open AI releases an AI Agent: Deep Research
Let’s first cover Deep Research.
What Happened: Open AI has pushed out Deep Research, a ChatGPT feature that's about to make professional researchers' jaws drop. Why? It turns hours of research into a 30-minute AI-powered deep dive. Let's break this down:
congrats to the team, especially @isafulf and @EdwardSun0909, for building an incredible product.
my very approximate vibe is that it can do a single-digit percentage of all economically valuable tasks in the world, which is a wild milestone.

What you need to know:
This isn't your regular ChatGPT quick-answer tool - Deep Research is powered by a specialized version of the o3 model, which brings phD analysis to chatgpt by specifically optimized for web browsing and data analysis
Multi-step research that would take humans hours gets compressed into 5-30 minutes(can go through up to 100-200 pages on the internet)
HubSpot co-founder Dharmesh Shah got a 11,000-word industry report brimming with insights even he hadn’t considered, while biomedical scientist Derya Unutmaz found AI-crafted cancer case analyses so flawless they rivaled a specialist MD’s work using Deep Research.
Currently exclusive to ChatGPT Pro users ($200/month) with a 100-query monthly limit
It has three reasoning effort modes unlike Google’s Deep Research which makes it stand out the most: Low (when you need it FAST), Medium (the sweet spot between speed and smarts), High (when accuracy is everything)
Available in the U.S., Switzerland, and the European Economic Area (sorry, rest of the world!)
Here’s a quick demo of Deep Research - CLICK to check it out (but come back to get the more tea on AI ☕️
Meet OpenAI’s latest reasoning model: o3
What Happened: OpenAI has introduced o3-mini, a small-scale reasoning model designed for STEM, coding, and logical problem-solving. It replaces o1-mini in the ChatGPT model picker and API, providing lower latency, higher rate limits, and structured output capabilities. But here's the kicker - it's 24% faster and 63% cheaper than o1.
What you need to know:
This isn't just an upgrade - o3-mini replaces o1-mini completely in both ChatGPT and the API, bringing lower latency, higher rate limits, and structured output capabilities that developers have been begging for.
Free users get their first taste of reasoning capabilities.
Plus and Team users get an upgrade to 150 messages per day (up from a measly 50)
The benchmarks are where things get WILD. We're talking:
- 83.6% accuracy on competition-level math problems (AIME 2024)
- 77.0% on PhD-level science questions
- 48.9% on SWE-bench Verified
- Can process a chunk of 200k tokens (while deepseek-R1 - 128k tokens and GPT-4 - 8192 tokens)
Why is it important?
While DeepSeek has been hogging the spotlight lately, OpenAI just proved they've got another ace up their sleeve. This isn't just about competing - it's about democratizing AI reasoning.
Google's global search market share just dipped below 90% for the first time since 2015, and tools like Deep Research are exactly why. Between this and Perplexity's aggressive moves (including trying to get in on that TikTok U.S. sale!), the search landscape is fracturing FAST.
⚡️ The competition is heating up:
ByteDance and Alibaba are probably already cooking up their Deep Research clones
DeepSeek won't be far behind
Google's got their own Deep Research (yes, same name - OpenAI's not even trying to be subtle here)
Softbank doubles down on AI: Commits $3B annually to OpenAI Partnership
In a power move that's shaking up the global AI landscape, SoftBank and OpenAI just announced a massive partnership that's going to make waves across Asia. During a livestream event in Tokyo that had tech watchers glued to their screens, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and OpenAI's Sam Altman revealed their new joint venture - and the numbers are HUGE.
What you need to know?
SoftBank is committing a whopping $3 billion PER YEAR to OpenAI's technology
They're launching "Cristal Intelligence" - a fancy name for customized OpenAI tools exclusive to Japanese businesses
This is a 50:50 joint venture through SB OpenAI Japan, targeting Japan's biggest companies
The tech suite will roll out across all SoftBank subsidiaries, including heavyweight names like Arm and PayPay
Japanese businesses get exclusive access to a specialized business version of ChatGPT and OpenAI's API
Why it is Important?
This isn't just about the money (though $3B annually is nothing to sneeze at). This move follows SoftBank's involvement in "Stargate" - a massive $500B data center initiative with OpenAI and Oracle. It's becoming crystal clear: SoftBank is going ALL IN on dominating AI deployment across Asia.
