MIT researchers used AI to create two new antibiotics that kill drug-resistant gonorrhea and MRSA.
Their models screened 36M possible compounds, filtering for both bacteria-killing power and human safety.
The AI-generated drugs, NG1 and DN1, attack bacteria in ways never seen before.
In mouse trials, DN1 wiped out MRSA skin infections, while NG1 defeated resistant gonorrhea.
Scientists say this could mark a “second golden age” of antibiotic discovery, shifting from catch-up to proactive drug design.
Google dropped Gemma 3 270M, a tiny open-source model that runs directly on phones, browsers, and consumer devices.
Despite its size, it outperforms other small models at following instructions.
On a Pixel 9 Pro, it powered 25 chats while using less than 1% battery.
Developers can fine-tune it in minutes—Google showed it off with a Bedtime Story Generator.
The race is heating up: ultra-small models like Gemma and Liquid AI’s LFM2 are redefining what on-device AI can do.
AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton says there’s a 10–20% chance advanced AI could wipe out humanity within 20 years.
He argues attempts to keep AI submissive won’t work, since future systems will be far smarter than humans.
His solution: teach AI to “love” us by hardwiring maternal instincts, like a parent caring for a child.
Speaking at Ai4 in Vegas and to CNN, Hinton warned that superintelligent AI will naturally seek survival and control.
He compared the threat to toddlers manipulating adults with candy, only this time, humanity could be the toddler.
