What Happened (Apr 2026):
Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI is heading toward trial, with claims that the company betrayed its original nonprofit mission and unjustly enriched itself after going for-profit.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit and donated ~$38M before leaving in 2018.
He alleges the shift to a for-profit model (after Microsoft’s $1B+ backing) violated that mission and misused funds.
The lawsuit seeks up to $130B+ in damages, removal of Altman/Brockman, and a forced unwind of OpenAI’s structure.
OpenAI and Microsoft argue Musk knew about the transition and is acting out of competitive frustration (xAI rivalry).
